The 2009 All-Sun Journal team Comments | Recommend June 14, 2009 12:00 AM Sun Journal Staff Sun Journal The New Bern girls soccer team reached the third round of the 4-A state playoffs, before losing to Wilmington Hoggard. Havelock lost to Jacksonville in the first round and West Craven had its best season ever with eight wins. It was a strong season for all of the Craven County girls soccer teams. The 2009 Sun Journal girls soccer team is announced. First team Forward - Katlin Povich, New Bern - Povich finished her high school career with 104 goals, ranking her second on the all-time list at New Bern. The senior forward led the Bears in scoring with 27 goals and 18 assists this season. Povich, who will play at East Carolina in the fall, was also selected to the all-state team for the second-consecutive season. Forward - Sarah Porter, Havelock - Porter put up big numbers for the Rams despite missing three games due to a knee injury. The junior forward finished with 25 goals and nine assists. Forward - Christiana Picot, Havelock - Picot, a four-year varsity player for Havelock, had six goals and five assists in her senior year. She helped lead the Rams to a 10-7-2 record. Midfielder - Josie Adams, Havelock - Adams stepped into a scorer's role for the Rams in 2009 and worked well on offense with Porter. The junior had eight goals and seven assists on the season. Midfielder - Kara Stutts, West Craven- Stutts served as one of the two captains on the team. The sophomore finished with seven goals and a team-high six assists. She was selected as the West Craven's Offensive Player of the Year by the coaching staff. Midfielder - Alex Cella, New Bern - Cella ranked second on the team in scoring, tallying 10 goals and 10 assists for the Bears. The senior started in all 22 games for the Bears, averaging nearly two shot attempts per game. Defender - Ashley Johnson, New Bern - Johnson was the senior leader of the Bears' defense, which was the strength of the team in the 2009 season. She started in all 22 games. The New Bern defense only allowed 11 goals on the season and recorded 15 shutouts. Defender - Kara Clowers, New Bern - Another senior leader on the Bears' defense, Clowers played on the outside of New Bern's flat-back four. She started in all 22 games. Defender - Catherine DeBolt, New Bern - DeBolt was stationed on the inside of the flat-back four and started in all 22 games for the Bears. Defender - Lauren Cleland, West Craven - Cleland, a starting fullback for the Eagles, served as a captain for the second-straight season and led the team in scoring with eight goals and three assists. She notched four goals in West Craven's 5-4 win over Camp Lejeune and was named the team's Most Valuable Player after the completion of the season. Goalkeeper - Berit Hansen, New Bern - Hansen rarely got tested, but when she did she passed with flying colors. The senior goalkeeper, who will play for East Carolina next season, only allowed 10 goals on the season. She recorded 46 saves. Hansen was named as an all-state performer.
