Bad bounce shoots down Eagles Comments | Recommend April 02, 2009 12:00 AM Jess Huffman Sun Journal Staff VANCEBORO - One bad bounce hurt the West Craven girls soccer team in the worst way Wednesday. With the match scoreless in the second half, defender Lauren Cleland deflected a shot. The ball landed right into the path of an oncoming D.H. Conley player, who subsequently scored with 15 minutes remaining. That was all D.H. Conley needed to earn a 1-0 victory over the Eagles. The lone goal of the game - scored by Conley's Emily Trapp - was the lone blemish by the West Craven defense. Defensively, we played shutdown all night,Steele said. We didn't give them one good look. In soccer, all it takes is one bounce. The defense, consisting of Ann Wiggins, Nallely Gallardo, Lauren Cleland and Julia Sheffield, limited the shots fired at goalkeeper Stormy Pledger. And Pledger, a sophomore with limited experience in the goal, collected 16 saves - sometimes taking hits from Conley players in the process. She had those for-sure hands tonight," Steele said. The Eagles had opportunities to score, particularly in the second half. Cleland was moved up to the midfield after Conley scored and put pressure on the defense. She booted a ball from 35 yards out in the final 10 minutes, only for the shot to miss the goal by five feet to the right. Yereni Gomez and Lacy Dunn also got off shot attempts for West Craven in the final minutes. Freshman Melissa Holland was a threat on offense for the Eagles, consistently beating Conley defenders to the ball. She was tripped up on two breakaways in the first half. The Eagles (5-7, 2-5) were coming off a 6-0 loss to West Carteret on Monday. Steele was much more pleased with his team on Wednesday "The girls were pretty fired up,he said. It was two different teams. Jess Huffman can be reached at (252) 635-5669 or at jhuffman@freedomenc.com.
