Without a single senior, West Craven’s girls soccer team takes the field striving to get better every game. Facing South Lenoir on Friday, West Craven focused on finishing. And junior midfielder Kara Stutts scored three goals to lead the Eagles to a 4-0 win at Jordan Stadium. “This team is very young,” Eagles coach Aaron Steele said. “Any time we make progress, we try to highlight it.” West Craven (2-0) took 41 shots on goal, including 22 in the first half. The Eagles also had 12 corner kicks. Several of the Eagles had opportunities to score early in the game, but Stutts finally put them on the board with 24 minutes remaining in the first half. She added a second goal nine minutes later off an assist from Lauren Cleland. “Kara can be a prolific scorer for us,” Steele said. “She has the potential to score three or four goals a game for us.” West Craven took a 3-0 lead into halftime after Cleland scored late in the first half. She knocked the ball into the net off a corner kick by Stutts. “That early start was good for us,” Steele said. “It gave me an opportunity to get some other players in the game. I’m hoping for production from everyone this season.” Stutts’ final goal came with 25 minutes left in the match. The West Craven defense, led by Cleland, Julia Sheffield, Ashleigh Schall and Nallely Gallardo, held South Lenoir to just three shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Stormy Pledger recorded three saves. The Eagles return to action Tuesday at East Carteret. “Defensively, I told them to not allow a shot on goal,” Steele said, “but they back each other up well. They did a good job back there.” Adam Thompson can be reached at 252-635-5670 or at athompson@freedomenc.com.
